chocolate gravy

He's another recipe from our wedding gift from my mom. We just call it chocolate gravy but credit goes to my grandma, Hilda Brasfield. When I was a kid, grandma would make this sweet breakfast treat when we visited her house. She lived across town in Little Rock Arkansas, along with grandpa and about a dozen german shepherds who all knew better than to mess with Grandma's babies.

We use Christmas plates all year.

The name gravy is deceiving. Syrup might come closer to how this chocolatey sugary goodness really tastes. Grandma baked biscuits from a can, nothing fancy about the biscuits. It's all about the chocolate. Start with buttered biscuits and drizzle some gravy over them.

I used a double boiler so I could cook some bacon and omelettes without scorching the chocolate gravy. After everything else was done, I removed the pot and went direct on the burner, constantly stirring because the gravy would easily burn if you didn't.

In case you're wondering, that's my sloppy handwriting on the recipe. Jilly added the title later. This recipe wasn't originally in the cook book my mom made us. The good thing about it being in a three ring binder is that we can add to it.

If you happen to be tracing the family geniology, Hilda was not my biological grandmother. She was Arthur's second wife but that never mattered to any of us.

Here's another fun fact for the family tree members, grandma got her high school diploma later in life. I don't remember her age but she was well into her retirement years. It's never too late to do what you wanted to do.

BTW, I didn't want to open a can of evaporated milk just to use a small bit of it. So I used regular milk (whole milk) instead and didn't use any water.
