Fort Bee Rescue

These girls built an unusual hive. It was unusual because it was completely outside. Bees usually build inside a compartment like a wall, a hollow tree or a backyard shed. The comb was all new this year. The property owners told me this happens almost every year. Maybe I'll get to return here. The property is located in a section locally known as The Fort, near the University of Tennesse and Downtown Knoxville. My girls and my grandson came along and were so very helpful. It would have been very difficult to complete this job without them. I relocated the bees to my yard. A short video giving a view of the height and the colony. Smoking the girls. They were very docile. I didn't need any protective gear until the last couple of combs. Preparing frames for the comb. Frame Feeder

How to assemble this frame feeder: I bought this feeder on Amazon. Here's a link where you can buy it, too: http://amzn.to/2p5CRkI Put it in your brood box. Take out one frame and put this in its place. Then fill it with three quarts sugar water (aka sugar syrup). I make mine 50/50 water/sugar. You need to feed your bees when they don't have resources in the hive, such as during a dearth or drought, when they have been moved into a new hive without honey stores, etc. I bought this one after catching a swarm. I didn't have any drawn comb or honey stores to give them. I put them in a fresh hive with new foundation frames. This means there was nothing in there. They had to start from scratch, which is fine for a swarm. In nature, a swarm would start with nothing anyway. I was worried they might not have enough food, so I bought this feeder.
